Arunachal Pradesh remains among the lesser explored destinations in the country. It is a journey cast for the avid and hardy traveler, but for the brave few that venture here, the region reveals itself to be a goldmine of natural beauty and age old traditions. The world moves slower here and you can soak up the many experiences that Arunachal – The Land of Dawn Lit Mountains, throws at you at a leisurely pace. From visiting Monpa tribes, crossing the Sela pass, visiting high altitude lakes, visiting monasteries and driving through beautiful landscape, there are many adventures in store. We also visit Majuli in Assam, largest fresh Water mid-river delta island in the country where Assamese Vashnavite culture flourishes.
ITINERARY
Guwahati, Tezpur, Dirang, Tawang, Majuli Island & Jorhat (8n / 9d)
Day 1 – Guwahati to Tezpur : Arrive at Guwahati and transfer to Tezpur. Overnight at Tezpur.
Day 2 – Tezpur to Dirang via Bomdila : After breakfast proceed to Dirang, land of the Monpa tribe. Midway is Bomdila from where there would be a steep ascent. The road passes through some of the densest and loveliest forests of India and the view of from the Dirang Valley is breathtaking. Dirang is also famous for its apple orchards, sheep breeding farms and natural hot springs. Enroute visit Tippi Orchid Centre and Sessa Orchid Sanctuary. Most part of the road skirts besides the Kameg river, passing occasionally through thick tropical forests. Overnight at Dirang.
Day 3 – Dirang to Tawang via Sella Pass : After breakfast take a fascinating drive to Tawang along the Dirang River. After a 2-hour drive cross the Sela Pass at an altitude of 14000 ft. From Sela Pass the downhill journey is incredibly beautiful. Check into your hotel. In the afternoon visit the Gompa – a 300-year old Buddhist monastery. It is considered the second most important after the one at Lhasa in Tibet. Overnight in Tawang.
Day 4 – Tawang : After breakfast drive uphill to see the lovely Pangong Tang Tso Lake and Tsungatsar Lake. This is an extremely scenic drive with bird’s eye view of Tawang township below. Afternoon free to stroll through the town. Overnight at Tawang.
Day 5 – Tawang to Dirang : After breakfast take the return journey to Dirang – 195 km. En route stop at villages and interact with the tribes with their colourful dresses. Dinner and overnight at Dirang.
Day 6 – Dirang-Tezpur : After breakfast drive to Tezpur. Visit a tea garden to see the processing of tea. Dinner and overnight.
Day 7 – Tezpur to Majuli Island : After breakfast begin your 5-hour journey to the largest fresh-water mid-river island of Majuli on UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a local ferry ride to reach the island. In the evening take a walking tour of the island. Overnight at Majuli.
Day 8 – Majuli : After breakfast visit the various cultural places in the island. Visit Satras to get an understanding of the Vaishanvite cultureprevelent here. Stop over at the mask making and pottery villages, to interact with the artisans. In the evening get cosy around a bonfire. Overnight at Bamboo cottage in Majuli.
Day 9 – Majuli to Jorhat / Guwahati : After breakfast return by ferry to Nematighat and then to Jorhat. Your tour will end after drop-off at Jorhat Airport for flight out of the city or if you choose drive back to Guwahati.
